It’s a tradition that dates back to 1907 just as cars began to travel on the streets of the city.
The Los Angeles Auto Show celebrates the automobile with an event that now attracts thousands of people to the Los Angeles Convention Center to check out somewhere around 1,000 new cars, concept vehicles and souped-up and modified machines from Nov. 22 to Dec. 1.
And while it’s cool to check out the rides, there’s a lot more to do at the Auto Show that just stare at shiny metal.
Here are five things other things to do at the L.A. Auto Show:
1. Find a road dog
Where: Subaru Booth, West Hall
Details: If you’re buying new wheels, why not get yourself a faithful road dog, too? Various rescue groups will have dogs up for adoption at the Subaru booth. And if you adopt a pup you can also make a personalized pet tag or chew toy for your new pet at the booth.
2. Pixar comes to life
Where: West Atrium
Details: OK, technically this is just looking at a car, but it’s a really cool car that you may never see in real life again. Disney’s upcoming animated film “Onward” features a cool van called Guinevere that’s driven by a pair of elf brothers. It’s decked out with crescent moon windows and a “Pegacorn” (part Pegasus, part unicorn) painted on the sides. And at the Auto Show people can take a picture with a real life version of Guinevere.
3. Take it on the road
Where: Outside the Convention Center
Details: If virtual reality just doesn’t do it for you, then get behind the wheel of a real car on a real road. Test drives are free with tickets to the Auto Show, all it takes is a reservation and a driver’s license and you can hit the road in brand-new cars from manufacturers including Acura, Audi, Dodge, Land Rover and others.
4. Test your slugging skills
Where: Chevrolet Exhibit, South Hall
Details: With the use of a virtual reality headset, people can feel what it’s like to step up to the plate in a major league stadium and take a few swings for the fences. It’s like a high-tech batting cage but with no danger of getting hit by the ball.
5. Gentlemen and ladies, start your engines, virtually
Where: Acura exhibit, South Hall
Details: There’s no need for a helmet for this race, just put on an Acura VR headset and get in the driver’s seat of a high speed race car.
If you go
When: Nov. 22-Dec. 1
Where: Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles
Tickets: Starting at $6 for children ages 6-12, $10 for seniors ages 65 and over; and $12 for adults.
