$1 million auto archives to go to Philadelphia and Hershey car museums - PennLive

An antique car lovers dream archive is being sold to the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in South Philadelphia and the Antique Automobile Club of America Library and Research Center in Hershey.

The Free Library of Philadelphia is selling its $1 million Automobile Reference Collection to both museums, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. The collection includes more than 100,000 auto manuals, journals, historic license plates, advertisements and more.

The collection is an invaluable resource for those looking to restore old vehicles, as the information it provides can show them the proper way to get the antiques back to their original shape.

In the automobile world, both the AACA Library and the Simeone Foundation are household names. The Simeone Foundation, in fact, was named the number one car collection in the world.

The AACA Library, which is not the same as the AACA Museum in Hershey, is expanding to house its part of the archive, which will let enthusiasts and collectors have easy access to the information.

The Free Library of Philadelphia was bequeathed the collection back in 1949 by Thomas McKean, who had spent years collecting owners’ manuals and brochures. Dr. Fred Simeone, who runs the Simeone Foundation, continued McKeans work into the 1950s.

Both the Simeone Foundation and the AACA have promised to digitize the items in the collection so that the public can access them.

The money from the sale will go towards maintaining and preserving the free library’s other archives.
