DETROIT -- The people behind the North American International Auto Show are hoping to attract a bigger and broader audience as part of the annual charity preview event prior to the opening of the show. Along with the traditional black-tie extravaganza -- also known as “auto show prom” -- the organizers of the event have announced an outdoor, relaxed charity event the same night that is described as “summer chic.”
“Charity Preview will be a party inside and outside that welcomes both an updated creative black-tie audience as well as late-night summer-chic attired guests,” said 2020 NAIAS Chairman Doug North in a press release. “Warm temperatures and late sunsets will make for a spectacular evening in terms of what attendees are going to see and experience at this special night of giving.”
The outdoor preview will differ from the black tie event in that it will not be held at the TCF Center -- formerly Cobo Hall -- rather at Hart Plaza. The outdoor event will feature Access to NAIAS outdoor campus in Hart Plaza from 8–11:30 p.m., along with food trucks and beer and wine vendors.
A headline performing artist will be announced soon for the party along with other “entertainment appealing to the millennial generation and beyond will be featured in the plaza’s open-air amphitheater in addition to various music options at multiple locations throughout the outdoor venue,” according to the press release.
The outdoor party will not include access to the auto show floor as that privilege is still reserved for the black-tie attendees. Tickets for the outdoor party are $200 each.
As for the black-tie event, that will include access to the show floor, complimentary cocktails and a selection of hors d’oeuvres representing “A Taste of Detroit” and entertainment inside that will include a “special appearance by an iconic musical guest on the Atrium stage.”
Tickets for the black-tie event are $400 each or $750 for a pair. If you purchase a black-tie ticket, you are allowed to attend the outdoor event as well. Those two events will have differing dress codes for the evening although those attending the black-tie affair are encouraged to think outside the norm.
“Inside, expect to see splashes of color and fun accents added to black-tie attire,” North said. “Outdoors, look for semi-formal with a summertime flair.”
Tickets go on sale on March 16, 2020. The charity events will benefit the following children’s hospitals in Detroit and C.S. Mott’s Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor:
- Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan
- Boys Hope Girls Hope Detroit
- Children's Center
- The Children's Foundation
- The Detroit Auto Dealers Association Charitable Foundation Fund, a fund of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan
