HALFMOON — An employee working on a car at Fast Lane Automotive accidently started a fire Saturday night that destroyed the building and six cars.
Clifton Park-Halfmoon Fire District Chief John VanChance Jr. said an employee at Fast Lane, 1627 Route 9, was welding on a vehicle around 7:40 p.m. when the vehicle caught fire.
VanChance said the employee tried to put the fire out himself, but it grew out of control and he called 911.
When fire crews arrived just after 7:52 p.m., the three-alarm blaze had already overtaken the building. In addition to the business, customers also lost their vehicles. VanChance said four cars inside the garage, one outside in front of the building and one outside in the back were destroyed.
Shad Walko, who lists himself as the CEO and manager of Fast Lane Automotive on Facebook, shared photos of the scene Saturday night and wrote: "It's all gone."
One firefighter suffered a sprained ankle when he slipped on ice at the scene. He went to a medical facility on his own and was discharged.
VanChance said the fire was extinguished at about 10 p.m.
Volunteers from Boght Corners, Halfmoon, Vischer Ferry, Hillcrest, West Crescent, as well as Clifton Park Halfmoon EMS, Saratoga County Sheriff deputies, State Police and the Saratoga County cause and origin team, also assisted at the scene Saturday.
